How Our Cancer Care Works

Gastrointestinal cancers are most often found during a routine GI procedure. What happens in the days afterwards matters enormously, and our program is built so that the gastroenterologist who found the abnormality, the pathologist who reads the tissue, and the oncologist who treats it belong to the same practice rather than three separate referrals.

Tissue is read in house by Dr. Ghulam Ilyas, so staging information arrives in days. Dr. Maqsood then builds a treatment plan with access to tumor boards, clinical trials, and advanced therapies, and coordinates supportive care — symptom management, nutrition, and surveillance — through the same practice that will follow you long term.

FAQs About Dr. Anaum Maqsood

What does Dr. Maqsood treat?

Dr. Anaum Maqsood is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist who leads our Oncology Program. She treats gastrointestinal cancers — colorectal, esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, liver and bile duct, small bowel, and neuroendocrine tumors — alongside blood disorders including anaemia from chronic GI blood loss.

Where did Dr. Maqsood train?

She trained at Agha Khan Medical College and SUNY Buffalo, then at the University of North Carolina and Baylor College of Medicine. She was previously an Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell and a Clinical Consultant at Methodist Hospital.

What happens if cancer is found during my GI procedure?

Tissue taken during your procedure is read in house by our GI pathologist, usually within days. If cancer is confirmed you are connected directly to Dr. Maqsood's team without starting a new referral from scratch, and your case can be reviewed at tumor board.

Do you offer clinical trials?

Yes. Our cancer program provides access to tumor boards, clinical trials, and advanced therapies alongside standard treatment, so options are considered at the point of diagnosis rather than later.
