FAQs About Dr. Larry Tong
Will I be asleep during my endoscopy or colonoscopy?
Most patients receive sedation or general anesthesia and have no memory of the procedure. Dr. Tong and our anesthesia team build an individualized plan based on your medical history and the procedure being performed.
Is anesthesia for a GI procedure safe?
Yes, in trained hands and with proper monitoring. Our anesthesia care includes continuous advanced monitoring, individualized dosing, and established protocols for a smooth, rapid recovery. Dr. Tong is a board-certified anesthesiologist with fellowship training from Virginia Commonwealth University.
What should I tell you before my procedure?
Tell us about all medications — especially blood thinners and diabetes medication — plus allergies, sleep apnoea, prior reactions to anesthesia, and any heart or lung conditions. These details shape your anesthesia plan and are collected before the day of your procedure.
How long does it take to recover from sedation?
Most patients are alert within an hour and go home the same day after a short monitored recovery. You will need someone to drive you home, and you should not drive, work, or make important decisions for the rest of that day.
Do I need to fast before my procedure?
Yes. You will be given specific fasting instructions, typically no food or drink for several hours beforehand. Following them exactly is a safety requirement — an unfasted stomach can force us to postpone your procedure.
