We are proud to introduce our new Oncology Program, led by Dr. Anaum Maqsood, a nationally recognized hematologist and oncologist. Dr. Maqsood brings world-class training from institutions such as Agha Khan Medical College, SUNY Buffalo, the University of North Carolina, and Baylor College of Medicine, where she also completed an NIH fellowship. She has served as an Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell and as a Clinical Consultant at Methodist Hospital, caring for patients with the most complex cancers.

A hematologist and oncologist specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the blood and cancers throughout the body — including those that affect the digestive system. Many gastrointestinal conditions can have links to blood disorders or malignancies, such as colon cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and gastrointestinal lymphomas.
In coordinated digestive care, the gastroenterologist identifies and diagnoses abnormalities in the digestive tract through procedures like endoscopy, colonoscopy, and biopsy. When results show cancerous or pre-cancerous changes, a hematologist-oncologist becomes a key part of the patient’s multidisciplinary care team. They provide comprehensive cancer evaluation, design individualized chemotherapy or targeted therapy plans, and work closely with gastroenterologists and surgeons to ensure seamless management and ongoing monitoring.

Coordinated Care From Diagnosis Through Treatment
Gastrointestinal cancers are frequently found during a routine GI procedure — a polyp at colonoscopy, a lesion at endoscopy, an abnormal mass on endoscopic ultrasound. What happens next determines a great deal. Our program is built so that the gastroenterologist who found the abnormality, the pathologist who reads the tissue, and the oncologist who treats it are part of the same team rather than three separate referrals.
Diagnosis — colonoscopy, EGD, endoscopic ultrasound with fine-needle biopsy, and ERCP to reach and sample the abnormality
Pathology — biopsies read in house by Dr. Ghulam Ilyas, a gastrointestinal pathologist, so staging information arrives in days
Treatment — medical oncology led by Dr. Anaum Maqsood, with access to tumor boards, clinical trials, and advanced therapies
Supportive care — symptom management, nutrition, and follow-up surveillance coordinated through one practice
Cancers We Treat
Our program cares for patients with colorectal cancer, esophageal and gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver and bile duct cancers, small bowel tumors, and neuroendocrine tumors of the digestive tract, alongside blood disorders that often accompany them, such as iron-deficiency anemia from chronic GI blood loss.

Who leads your oncology program?
Our oncology program is led by Dr. Anaum Maqsood, a hematologist and medical oncologist, working directly with our gastroenterology and pathology team so that diagnosis and treatment are handled by one coordinated group.
What happens if a cancer is found during my procedure?
Tissue taken during your procedure is read in house by our GI pathologist, usually within days. If cancer is confirmed, you are connected to our oncology team without starting a new referral process from scratch, and your case can be reviewed at tumor board.
Do you offer clinical trials and advanced therapies?
Yes. Our cancer program provides access to tumor boards, clinical trials, and advanced therapies alongside standard treatment, so options are considered at the point of diagnosis rather than later.
Where are your Houston offices?
We see patients at 7919 Kirby Dr, Houston, TX 77054 and at 1213 Hermann Drive, Suite 360, Houston, TX 77004, with our own endoscopy suite on site.
Do you accept insurance, and what if I do not have any?
We accept most major insurance plans and verify your benefits before your visit. If you are uninsured, we offer transparent all-inclusive self-pay pricing, so you know the cost before anything is scheduled.
