We are proud to introduce our new Oncology Program, led by Dr. Anaum Maqsood, a nationally recognized hematologist and oncologist. Dr. Maqsood brings world-class training from institutions such as Agha Khan Medical College, SUNY Buffalo, the University of North Carolina, and Baylor College of Medicine, where she also completed an NIH fellowship. She has served as an Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell and as a Clinical Consultant at Methodist Hospital, caring for patients with the most complex cancers.
Role of a Hematologist and Oncologist in Digestive Disease Care
A hematologist and oncologist specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the blood and cancers throughout the body — including those that affect the digestive system. Many gastrointestinal conditions can have links to blood disorders or malignancies, such as colon cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and gastrointestinal lymphomas.
In coordinated digestive care, the gastroenterologist identifies and diagnoses abnormalities in the digestive tract through procedures like endoscopy, colonoscopy, and biopsy. When results show cancerous or pre-cancerous changes, a hematologist-oncologist becomes a key part of the patient’s multidisciplinary care team. They provide comprehensive cancer evaluation, design individualized chemotherapy or targeted therapy plans, and work closely with gastroenterologists and surgeons to ensure seamless management and ongoing monitoring.
Together, gastroenterologists and hematologist-oncologists help patients receive early detection, advanced treatment, and compassionate, coordinated care for all digestive cancers and related blood conditions — promoting better outcomes and overall digestive health.
